David Drew, Stroud, Tory Target #11
Tory Target #11
Stroud’s not your typical Labour seat – it’s predominantly rural with a collection of market towns set in stunning scenery. There are narrow valleys full of old mills opening out onto the Severn estuary. And if Stroud is not typical then neither perhaps is its MP, David Drew. He’s always been a ‘critical friend’ of the Government, not afraid to speak up on issues where he believes they are wrong but passionate in support of its work in tackling poverty, in international development and in education and the environment.
David was elected to Parliament in 1997, the first Labour MP for the area since Ben Parkin in 1945. He held the seat in 2001 and 2005 but with only a tiny majority (350). And now he faces a Tory candidate backed by Ashcroft money and the hunting brigade who want to reclaim all of Gloucestershire for the Tories.
But David is determined to hold his “super marginal” and has been joined in his campaign by teams of local volunteers aged from 9 to 90. He has volunteers coming from local union branches, from animal welfare campaigners and from our twinnedseats.
Local support for the best MP we’ve ever had is proving fantastic – but we need all the help we can if David is to beat Goliath.
